Brac Limestone

An unexpected factor in Croatia’s economy is actually stone. One of Croatia’s largest islands, Brac, is home to one of the country’s most productive limestone quarries. For hundreds of years, countries across Europe and abroad have imported limestone from Brac to build royal palaces and government buildings alike. The Romans first arrived in Brac in 167 B.C. to start quarrying for stone for their mansions.

When people first hear Croatia, they tend to think of the beautiful beaches and rich history, and not so much their underground resources. That being said, it makes sense that limestone is one of their more popular exports. Croatia is a very dry, rocky country, much like Colorado, and there are rocks and mountains everywhere you go, including the beaches.

Since a variety of buildings across the globe are made from Brac limestone, I put together a short little quiz to see if you can figure out what buildings are made with the limestone from the Croatian island:

I was glad to discover this unique export of Croatia's and how it has only added to their rich history and increasing capital. It's always a pleasure to find out new things about this beautiful country every day!
